🐟 Fish Species to Target by Season
Spring (March–May)
Smallmouth Bass: This river is renowned for its smallmouth bass population. Anglers often catch fish over 15 inches, especially near boulder piles and rootwads.
Paddlefish: These prehistoric fish migrate up the river from Table Rock Lake to spawn. The legal season runs from March 15 to April 30, with a minimum length of 34 inches (eye to fork of tail). Snagging is the only legal method to catch them.
Summer (June–August)
Channel Catfish: A favorite for families, channel catfish are abundant. Use nightcrawlers, stink baits, or chicken livers around fallen timber and rootwads.
Northern Rock Bass (Goggle-eye): These feisty fish are great for beginners. They're often found near boulders and can be caught using worms or small lures.
Longear Sunfish: Known for their vibrant colors, longear sunfish are easy to catch with small hooks baited with worms or small artificial lures.
Fall (September–November)
Largemouth and Spotted Bass: As water temperatures cool, these bass species become more active. Target slower-moving pools with soft plastics or crankbaits.
White Bass: These schooling fish can be found in deeper pools. Look for surface activity and use small jigs or spinners.
🧰 Best Gear for Family Fishing on the James River
For a successful and enjoyable fishing trip, consider the following gear:
Rod & Reel: A medium-action spinning rod (6–7 feet) is versatile for various species.
Tackle Box Essentials:
Hooks: Sizes 6–10 for sunfish and bass; 2/0–4/0 for catfish.
Sinkers: Split shot and egg sinkers for bottom fishing.
Bobbers: Adjustable for different depths.
Lures: Crankbaits, spinners, and soft plastics in natural colors.
Bait: Live worms, nightcrawlers, stink baits, and chicken livers are effective.
For families, a basic tackle kit with these essentials can be found at local sporting goods stores or online retailers.
