What to Bring for the Perfect Day on the James River in Missouri

Planning a float trip on the James River in Missouri? Whether you're tubing or paddleboarding with Float the James, having the right gear can make the difference between a smooth, relaxing day and a soggy scramble for lost flip-flops and sunburn relief.

To help you have the best river float in southwest Missouri, we’ve put together a simple, smart packing list based on one of our most frequently asked questions: "What should I bring for a float trip?"

Float Trip Essentials: What to Pack

1. Leave Valuables at Home If you don’t absolutely need it on the river, don’t bring it. Wallets, expensive sunglasses, or electronics are safest left behind.

2. A Waterproof Bag or Box (With a Strap!) If you’re bringing essentials like your phone, car keys, or ID, keep them in a waterproof case or dry bag. Choose one that floats and has a carabiner or strap so you can secure it to your cooler or board. This helps avoid the all-too-common "lost to the river" scenario. We also have waterproof phone bags available for purchase in our Welcome Center!

3. Cooler With Beverages & Snacks Yes, you can bring your own alcohol, but remember no glass containers are allowed on the beach or in the water. Stick to cans or plastic containers. Hydration is key, so pack plenty of water, especially in the summer sun. Snacks like trail mix, sandwiches, or fruit make great mid-float fuel.

4. Sun Protection You’ll be on the water for hours, and the sun reflects off the river. Be sure to bring:

  • Sunscreen

  • A wide-brimmed hat or cap

  • Polarized sunglasses (with a strap if possible)

5. Proper Footwear The James River has a rocky bottom, and you’ll be stepping in and out of the water at various points. We strongly recommend closed-toe water shoes or sandals with straps. Flip-flops float away fast, and bare feet invite stubbed toes and slips.

6. Towel & Change of Clothes Keep these in your car for when your float is over.

7. Life Vest or Personal Flotation Device (PFD) We provide life vests, but if you have a favorite style or fit, bring your own. Missouri law requires that each person on a paddleboard or raft must have an approved life jacket available. They’re not required for tubing, but are still a good idea for kids and weak swimmers.

Bonus Tips for an Even Better Float on the James River

  • Trash bags: We've partnered with the Missouri Department of Conservation and Missouri Stream Team to provide float-friendly trash bags. Keep the river clean by packing out all your trash. It’s part of being a respectful river guest.

  • Bungee cords or straps with plastic ends: Our paddleboards come with fixed bungees, but additional straps are handy for keeping your cooler or dry bag secure or connecting your tubes. Plastic end or closed carabiner clips are required to avoid sharp metal ends puncturing the inflatables.

  • Small first aid kit: Minor scrapes can happen when walking on rocks or navigating shallow areas.
