River Safety: How We Determine if it's Safe to Float the James

Sometimes, Mother Nature throws weather at us that could foil your plans for a float. River levels can change rapidly due to rainfall, and we want to ensure that your safety is our top priority. So, how do we determine if it is safe to float the James River in Galena?

Understanding River Levels

River levels refer to the height of the water surface at a certain point, which is crucial for evaluating how safe it is to float.

Real-time data from river gauges is key for evaluation. In Galena, the NOAA's National Water Level Observation Network (NWPS) provides an excellent resource with live river height gauges at the Y Bridge. Regularly checking this data allows us to track current river heights and observe trends, ensuring you stay informed about conditions.

Higher river levels bring with them cloudy, deeper water that is moving faster than usual and can hide hazards such as rocks and fallen trees.

Factors Influencing River Levels

The two main factors that affect the James River height at Galena are rainfall, and the Table Rock Dam.

  1. Rainfall: Intense rain can raise river levels swiftly. For example, a single heavy storm can cause levels to surge 2-3 feet in just a few hours.

  2. Table Rock Dam: The dam's primary functions of flood control and hydroelectric power generation influence the James River's water levels and flow dynamics.

When is it Safe to Float the James River?

The James River is safest for floating when the water level is below 5 feet. Experienced paddlers may feel comfortable floating at up to 5.5 feet with proper gear and PFDs, however, it is essential to consider your own skill level.

When river levels are above 5 feet, Float the James does not operate drop-ins for floats as a safety precaution.

Safety First

We know having to cancel or delay your float trip might not be ideal, but your safety is our top priority. We continually monitor river levels and encourage our guests to check the weather forecasts and follow the live river heights leading up to your scheduled trip or before heading out for a walk-in float.

If we determine it is unsafe to float, we always offer pre-paid guests the opportunity to reschedule at no charge, or review refund options. We're proactive in communicating when there is potential for hazardous conditions via our Facebook page and email to pre-registered guests.

Happy floating!
